Protecting Your New Smile: Retainer Care Instructions

You did the work to create a smile you love—now let’s help you protect it! Retainers are an important part of keeping your teeth in their new positions after orthodontic or Invisalign® treatment.

At Westchester Gentle Dentistry, we want retainer care to feel simple and manageable. Here’s what you need to know.

Your First 3 Months

For the first 3 months after completing orthodontic treatment, wear your retainers day and night, removing them only to eat, drink anything other than water, brush, and floss.

After the first 3 months, you can transition to wearing your retainers every night while you sleep.

Teeth naturally have a tendency to shift over time, so nighttime retainer wear should continue for as long as you want to maintain your new smile. Making your retainers part of your nightly routine is one of the easiest ways to protect the results you worked so hard to achieve.

How Long Do Retainers Last?

Retainers can often last up to two years, but every patient is different. Over time, retainers can gradually stretch, loosen, or wear down.

This may happen sooner if you grind or clench your teeth—something many people do without realizing it. Your first set may also experience more wear because you’ll be wearing it nearly full-time during the first few months.

That’s why it’s important to pay attention to how your retainers fit. If they begin to feel loose, damaged, or noticeably different, please let us know.

Every 6 Months: Check the Fit

If you have multiple sets of retainers, we recommend trying on a fresh duplicate set about every 6 months.

If the new set feels significantly tighter than the retainers you’ve been wearing, your current set may have stretched or your teeth may have started to move. Switching to a fresh set can help keep your smile on track.

Having backup retainers also gives you extra peace of mind. With only one set, it can be harder to recognize subtle changes in fit until your teeth have already shifted.

Why We Recommend Vivera™ Retainers

For patients who want additional protection for their new smile, we recommend Vivera™ retainers, made by the makers of Invisalign®.

Vivera provides four sets of custom retainers, giving you convenient backups if a set becomes worn, stretched, damaged, or lost. Your digital scan can also be kept on file, making it easier to order additional sets in the future when appropriate.

Think of your retainers as protection for the time and investment you’ve already made in your smile.

When You Need New Retainers

Please contact Westchester Gentle Dentistry if:

  • Your retainers feel loose, stretched, cracked, or damaged
  • A fresh set feels significantly tighter than your current set
  • You lose or misplace a retainer
  • You begin using your last backup set
  • Your retainer no longer fits comfortably
  • You notice any changes in the position of your teeth

Whenever possible, we recommend having a backup set available so you’re never left without a retainer.

If your teeth and dental work have remained stable, we may be able to order additional Vivera retainers using your existing digital scan. If anything has changed, we can simply take a new scan to ensure the best possible fit.

Keeping Your Retainers Clean

Keeping your retainers clean helps them stay fresh, clear, and comfortable.

Gently clean them regularly using cool or lukewarm water and the cleaning method recommended by our team. Avoid hot water, which can distort the material.

And remember: you’re always welcome to bring your retainers with you to your professional dental cleaning at WGD. Our team will be happy to help clean them for you.
