What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants refer to small posts that are surgically placed beneath a patient’s gum line, where they act as replacement tooth roots. Since the posts are made from biocompatible materials like titanium, they’re capable of fully fusing with the jawbone tissue. Once this has occurred, a sturdy foundation exists for a corresponding dental restoration to be placed. Dental implants are unique in the sense that no other replacement option brings back the entire lost tooth’s structure from root to crown.
The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

Before you commit to rebuilding your smile with dental implants, it’s important to note that the process typically takes months and requires multiple appointments. Not every patient’s experience will be exactly the same, but in general, there are four main steps that are usually followed. If you want to learn more about how dental implants work, read on for a brief overview of the process.
Initial Dental Implant Consultation

When you decide to get dental implants, the first step will be to schedule a consultation at our practice. During this visit, we’ll use the latest technology to evaluate the current state of your mouth and jaw. Our team will then let you know whether dental implants are the right choice for your smile based on our findings. We will also explain whether you will need to undergo bone grafting or other preliminary treatments before you can have dental implants placed.
Dental Implant Surgery

Dental implant posts need to be surgically inserted into your jaw so that they can act as artificial tooth roots. Thanks to our in-house periodontist, we’re able to perform this procedure right here at our office in Port Chester. The surgery is relatively straightforward; once your mouth has been numbed with a local anesthetic, an incision is made in the gums, and the implant posts are placed in the appropriate spots in the jawbone. Afterward, sutures are used to close the gums, and protective caps are attached to each implant post.
Dental Implant Osseointegration & Abutment

After dental implant placement comes a natural process known as osseointegration. This is when the dental implants form a lasting bond with the bone around them and essentially become part of your jaw. The timeline for osseointegration can vary from patient to patient, but it’s typically in the range of three to six months.
After osseointegration, you’ll be ready to receive your abutments, which are the connector pieces that allow us to attach a prosthesis to your implant posts. Once your mouth has healed from abutment placement, we can move on to the final step of the dental implant process.
Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s)

Our team will capture impressions of your mouth so that the final prosthesis can be created. Depending on the number of teeth being replaced, you may get a dental crown, a dental bridge, or a denture. No matter what kind of prosthesis you get, it will be carefully personalized in order to look as natural as possible in your mouth.
Once the final prosthesis is complete, you’ll return to our office for one last appointment. We will secure the prosthesis to your implant posts, thus recompleting your smile.
Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants don’t just replace teeth – they also provide a direct boost to a patient’s overall oral wellness and quality of life! A few of their most notable benefits include:
- Dental implants prevent the intense bone resorption that occurs following tooth loss.
- They can be used to replace any number of missing teeth regardless of where they were within the mouth.
- Dental implant patients have almost all of their original biting power restored, which means they can freely eat all of their favorite foods.
