One of the many benefits of an Invisalign orthodontic treatment is that the clear aligners are custom fitted to your unique smile. This helps ensure that they’re as comfortable as possible and are able to straighten out crooked teeth in a timely manner. While this feature is ultimately a net-positive, it can make the aligners difficult to remove at first. If you’re having trouble taking your Invisalign out of your mouth, this expert guide is for you!
Step 1: Dry Your Hands
It’s simple: if your hands are soaking wet, they’re likely going to slip and slide over the plastic. Water is notorious for breaking traction and creating loose grips. Make sure your fingertips are bone dry, or, if you prefer, wear a pair of surgical gloves.
Step 2: Start from The Back
Your first instinct may be to tug on the front-facing portion of your aligners. But physics will work in your favor if you start from the back. For the best leverage, use your thumb and forefinger to squeeze the plastic covering your back molars. This should break the suction between your aligners and teeth. If you’ve ever removed eye contact, the principle is similar.
Step 3: Relax and Pull
Now that you have a good grip on your aligners, it’s time to give them a gentle pull downwards. They might not pop all the way off, but that’s okay – the idea is to loosen them up a bit first. Repeat step 2 on the opposite side of your mouth, slowly working your way towards the front of your aligners until you’re able to pull them free. Try to stay relaxed as you do so. Getting frustrated could cause your facial muscles to tighten, which will make it more difficult to remove your Invisalign.
Additional Tips and Tricks
Your aligners are meant to come out, so rest assured, you’ll get the hang of it eventually. While you’re still getting used to the process, though, you might benefit from a few additional tips and tricks:
- Use an aligner removal tool. These tools are specifically designed to help you pull your Invisalign loose, and can be a huge help whenever your aligners are literally in a tight squeeze.
- Don’t remove right after enjoying a cold drink. Since Invisalign is made of plastic, direct contact with cold temperatures can sometimes make the material less flexible.
- Trim your nails. It can be tricky to get a good grip on your Invisalign when your nails are long (but not impossible!). In the beginning, you might find it easier to simply keep them short.
With some patience and expert advice, taking out your Invisalign trays will be second nature in no time!
